Playgroup, Nursery, KG and Prep: early-years classes explained

Lahore schools use different names and ages for their early-years classes. Before comparing schools, check which class your child’s age fits at each one.

The common class names

The number of early-years classes and the names vary by school, so a child may join “Nursery” at one campus and “KG” at another at the same age.

  • Playgroup — often the first year of school.
  • Pre-Nursery and Nursery — the next steps; some schools use only one of these names.
  • Kindergarten (KG) and Prep — the year or years before Grade 1.

Age cut-offs

Each school sets a minimum age for each class on a given date. Ask for the cut-off date and the age required for the class you are applying to — a few weeks can decide which class your child joins.

What to look for in an early-years programme

  • Class size and the number of adults in each room.
  • A safe, clean space with shaded outdoor play.
  • Play-based learning, reading aloud and early numeracy.
  • Toilet, nap and snack routines suited to young children.
  • How the school settles new children in the first weeks.
  • Whether the child can continue to Grade 1 and beyond on the same campus.

This guide is general information. Fees, dates and requirements differ between schools — confirm current details with the campus before making a decision or payment.
